04TM02_00 Lord Denning performed the official opening of the redevelopment in 1988. Known as Tom to his friends, he was born in Whitchurch and spoke with a lovely Hampshire burr. He was appointed a Judge in 1944 and became Master of the Rolls; a position he held for 20 years until retirement aged 83. He was perhaps the greatest law-making judge of the century and the most controversial. He lived in Whitchurch until he died in 1999 aged 100. Internet
