Alec Smith, the village's oldest surviving ex-serviceman, is shown wearing his poppy with pride. The poppy is the symbol of remembrance and of the Poppy Appeal. The Appeal is organized by the Royal British Legion and poppies are worn in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. The money raised by the Appeal enables the RBL to carry out its charitable work.
