Hedgehogs are well known for their defence mechanism of rolling up into a ball. This can afford protection from foxes but unfortunately this doesn't work too well with cars. This one hasn't fully curled up and you can just see its nose. Hedgehogs hibernate for the winter, depending on the severity of the weather and the availability of food. A bonfire which has been left standing in the garden is a good place for them to hibernate - a point to remember if planning a bonfire in winter.
