The Mute Swan is one of our heaviest flying birds with the male (cob) averaging 26lbs, with a wingspan of 6'6" to 7'10" and standing about 4' tall on land. Cobs have a larger nob on their bill than females (pens) which are slightly smaller in size. It is often said that the blow from the wing of a swan can break a persons arm. This may be folklore but they might harm a child and could certainly give a nasty peck. They are protected by law and deliberately harming them is a criminal offence.
