The bathing pool, 1908, just up stream from Town Mill. The Borough Council provided separate changing rooms for boys and girls. The facilities are believed to have closed in about 1950 after a case of polio. Poliomyelitis hit epidemic levels in Britain in 1947 and continued into the 1950's when the use of vaccines caused the threat to fade away. Polio could cause death and some survivors were unable to breath without assistance or had limbs permanently paralysed or wasted and weakened.
