Their outside loo was emptied every Friday by Mr Switzer, the night soil man. If it filled up before then they put newspaper on the floor and did it on that. Their loo paper was torn up newspaper (as it was for most people then).The sleeping arrangements for the 3 bedrooms were: 1 Mum and dad with a little bed for John; 2 Tommy, Denis and Fred in one bed; 3 Peter and an Aunt who was staying with them because she was ill. Presumably this was an improvement on the thatched cottage.
