In 1899, during the 2nd Boer War in South Africa, Colonel Robert Baden-Powell was the Commanding Officer of Mafeking while it was under siege by the Boer army. Despite being outnumbered 4 to 1, his forces held out for 217 days against a Boer army of 8,000. One significant initiative was the formation of a cadet corps of youths that supported the troops by carrying messages and performing other non-combat tasks.
